Dylan Carter and Drew Kline planned to drive seven hours from Kentucky to Ohio for a baby shower in October, expecting to celebrate their first child’s upcoming arrival. Instead, they walked in carrying infant Sixx Carter Kline, born nearly 11 weeks early, stunning the 60 guests.

Carter, 33, mistook her growing discomfort for Braxton Hicks contractions and pressed on with the trip. But during a family trivia night at a local restaurant, she realized her contractions were regular and intense. Three hours after arriving at Cleveland Clinic Akron General, she delivered Sixx, who weighed just 3 lbs., 2.6 oz.

Doctors had warned Carter about the risk of prematurity because she was born with uterus didelphys, a rare condition linked to early labor. “I knew he might come early, but not two months early,” she said, admitting she feared his body wasn’t ready.
Kline said he prayed throughout, especially when Carter’s placenta began to separate and the team decided Sixx had to be delivered immediately. “I was just praying that everything would be okay with Dylan and Sixx,” he recalled.
Neonatologist Dr. Jalal Abu-Shaweesh explained that underdeveloped lungs often plague preemies. Sixx spent 63 days in the NICU on a CPAP machine and briefly on a ventilator to aid breathing. He also faced Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a heart arrhythmia treated with medication.
By discharge, Sixx had almost doubled his weight to 7 lbs., 1.8 oz. Carter admitted it was heartbreaking to watch him struggle, but praised the nurses, specialists and neonatologists for their unwavering support. “They felt like family to us,” she said.
